Albufeira lies on the coast of central Algarve, situated in an area that has become known as the "Golden Triangle" due to the real estate boom the region has experienced over recent years.
Albufeira was once a major trading seaport during the era of Moorish rule, when it was known as Al-Buhera. The major earthquake of 1755 levelled much of the old city, destroying the castle and the old town church, but despite this some parts of the old town remain.
Throughout the summer months, Albufeira attracts large numbers of tourists, and also has a substantial ex-patriat community. There are 23 main beaches that are easy to access from the centre, all of which are well maintained.
Visitors will also find that by hiring a car and taking a short drive along the coast road, they can discover some very attractive small beaches and coves that are often almost deserted.
"The Strip", a row of bars, restaurants and nightclubs, runs from the Montechoro Hotel down to the Praia da Oura, and stays open throughout the night. A large number of golf courses are also within easy reach.
However, those seeking to experience a more authentically Portuguese holiday will do well to venture further inland, for Albufeira is surrounded by some very beautiful countryside. Whilst understandably, most visitors to the Algarve region go seeking sunshine and golden beaches, a trip into the Algarve countryside can offer very attractive places to picnic, surrounded by rows of orange and almond trees.
