Elvas Aqueduct
João Paulo
Approaching Elvas, the first thing the visitor sees is the collosal aqueduct built on Roman foundations between 1498 and 1622. The water is carried across the plains to the city where it still runs into the Misericordia fountain built in 1622.
Elvas lies close to the border with Spain and is a popular venue for weddings due to its historical character and romantic aesthetic.
From high on the ramparts of the fort, the observer can see the hills of Spain in the distance, as well as a large number of eagles that rise up and swoop down over the plains below.
The Parish church is built in Manueline style, with an elaborate ceiling and notable ornaments. An elaborate black and white chequerboard mosiac pavement leads from the church to the main square.
Close to the parish church is that of St. Domingos, built in 1543. This is an octagonal church supported by eight marble columns adorned with beautifully elaborate decorations and lined with shimmering tiles.
