For those travelling around Lisbon or Porto the metro systems offer the simplest and quickest means of getting round the cities. Here we provide some basic information, and links to the official metro websites.
The Lisbon subway system is cheap to use, clean, safe and punctual. There are 4 lines - Linha Azul (Blue Line); Linha Amarela (Yellow Line); Linha Verda (Green Line); Linha Vermelha (Red Line). An extension to the airport is currently in development.
Visitors travelling throughout Lisbon during the course of the day (or night) will likely find the subway the most useful means of transportation. Virtually all of central Lisbon is contained within Zone 1, Zone 2 reaches out into the suburbs of the capital....(More info.)
The Porto Metro runs underground throughout central Porto, and above ground connecting the city´s suburbs. Having been only recently built (2002) the metro is modern and clean.
The metro is the first in world to use a fully contactless ticketing system - there are no entry barriers or regular ticket inspections. Instead travellers purchase blue tickets (Andante Azul) from the vending machines in the stations which are then validated by scanning them in front of the yellow machines located in the stations.....(More info.)
