Óbidos
José Manuel
Óbidos is a small fortified town, made very attractive by the narrow cobbled streets that run between bright white houses decorated with richly coloured flowers. The town has obviously attracted many talented artisans, because there is such a concentration of finely decorated churches, sanctuaries and chapels to be found within its walls.
Immediately within the town gates lies the first of the towns several auditoriums. Both the Casa da Musica and St. James Church host a wide program of musical events throughout the year. A walk though the maze of narrow streets takes the visitor past numerous places of worship, art galleries and artisans stores. The Musuem of Abilio de Matos e Silva lies in the centre of the town.
At the far end of the town lies the castle, that is also a pousada (State Inn), the second auditorium and the old Arms Square which has been adapted into an amphitheatre. There are a large number of quality restaurants within Óbidos, providing an enjoyable conclusion to a day spent looking out over the plains from the castle ramparts.
