Setubal lies just beneath Lisbon and on the River Sado. It is one of the oldest cities of Portugal - a flourishing Roman community used to exist in the Troia area. As the capital has grown over the years Setubal has become wealthier and more urbanised, now essentially being a suburb of Lisbon.
Whilst the development of apartments and shopping centres makes much of Setubal rather uninteresting for travellers, there are sights worth seeing and areas of great beauty just outside the city.
The 15th century "church of Jesus" is built in Manueline style with the trademark writhing, twisting pillars holding the roof aloft and Levantine and Moorish tiles surrounding the high altar.
Between Setubal and the coast lies the "Serra da Arrabida", miles of vast limestone ridges and forests of oaks, bay trees and plantlife unique to the peninsula. "Portinho da Arrabida" is home to one of the very finest beaches in Portugal. Emerald waters and white sands surround the area of protected woodland that flows along the coast.
Traditionally the Portuguese take their holidays en masse in August but visitors in the months immediately preceeding and following will find the beach practically empty. In the first weeks of September the visitor can expect temperatures in the high 20's.
After a luxurious day swimming or simply soaking up the sunshine and sights, a meal at one of the two excellent restaurants is the perfect way to complete the day. You can be sure that whatever fish appear on the pratos do dia will be exceptionally fresh.
